2020 retreat

APPLICATIONS

Important general instruction

Applications submitted before 1/1/20 are eligible for a 10% tuition discount, and will receive acceptance responses by 1/15/20.

 

We do not charge an application fee; we don't believe in them. In exchange, we request that applicants, before applying, have a concrete intent to enroll if selected.

 

Retreat Participant Application

 

What you'll need to apply:

  • An electronic copy of your résumé or curriculum vitae, or a typed bio if you have neither.

  • A link to at least one and up to three videos (YouTube preferred) of you conducting in performance or rehearsal, camera facing the conductor.

    • Videos should be between about three and ten minutes in length.

    • If you submit more than one video, consider including pieces in contrasting styles.

  • A link to a two to three minute video (YouTube preferred) of you introducing yourself, talking briefly about your background and professional trajectory, your goals for growth at the Retreat, and why the Retreat appeals to you. We encourage candid, unscripted answers!

Application instructions and timeline:

  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be selected to participate.

  • Applicants should have at least a baseline understanding of conducting gesture and music reading, terminology, theory, and history.

  • Submit your application no later than March 1, 2020.

  • Applicants will be notified no later than March 15, 2020 of their status, at which point additional instructions will be provided for payment and curriculum preparation.

  • Accepted applicants must follow the instructions for payment and pay the deposit within five days (March 20) of notification of acceptance to reserve their spot.

  • A limited amount of need-based financial aid may be available; apply here after submitting the Retreat application. We recommend that aid applicants apply for the Retreat and aid as early as possible to maximize your chance of being awarded a financial aid package.

Retreat Auditor Application

 

What you'll need to apply:

  • An electronic copy of your résumé or curriculum vitae, or a typed bio if you have neither.

  • Be prepared to write a few brief sentences discussing why the Retreat appeals to you.

Application instructions and timeline:

  • Auditors must be at least 18 years old to apply.

  • Submit your application no later than May 1, 2020.

  • There is a flexible cap of about ten auditors. Auditors are confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • A reminder that auditor tuition does not include lodging. Auditors will need to arrange lodging with Boulder Mountain Lodge or a nearby property directly.

Retreat Fellowship Application

 

What you'll need to apply:

  • An electronic copy of your résumé or curriculum vitae.

  • A letter of recommendation from a current conducting teacher, preferably your primary private teacher.

  • A link to a two videos (YouTube preferred) of you conducting in both a performance and a rehearsal, camera facing the conductor. Pieces of contrasting styles, periods, etc. are preferred.

  • A link to a video (YouTube preferred) of you introducing yourself, talking briefly about your background and career trajectory, your goals for growth at the fellowship, and why the fellowship appeals to you. We encourage candid, unscripted answers! A video is preferred, since we glean more of a sense of who you are by watching you speak, but written introductions may be submitted with your CV in lieu of a video.

Application instructions, requirements, and timeline:

  • Applicants are required to be at least 21 years of age and a current masters, doctoral, or artist diploma conducting student in the appropriate division (choral or band/orchestra) at an accredited music institution. Students graduating in Spring 2020 are not eligible.

  • Applications are due no later than March 1, 2020.

  • Applicants will be notified no later than March 15, 2020 of their status, at which point additional instructions will be provided.

Retreat Financial Aid

 

A limited amount of financial aid may be available for the Retreat. Aid will be granted only in the form of tuition discounts or waivers, and is primarily based on need, but we will actively seek people who can contribute to our objective of bringing a diversity of perspectives.

Instructions for application:

  • Submit your application for the Retreat first and make sure to check the box at the end of the application that indicates that you'll be applying for aid.

  • Applications for financial aid are due no later than March 5, 2020; however, we recommend applying for the Retreat and aid as early as possible to maximize your chance of being awarded a financial aid package. 

  • Decisions about financial aid may be sent as late at May 5.
