There are two Retreats every July––one for choral conductors, and one for instrumental (both band and orchestra) conductors. Up to twenty applicants are selected for each Retreat, with additional spots for non-participant auditors. Each is held for six days, Monday to Saturday, at the Boulder Mountain Lodge in Boulder, Utah.

The Retreat is designed with flexibility and responsiveness to the individual needs and goals of our participants. We seek a diverse array of perspectives for the enrichment of the experiences of all involved in the program. For that reason, conductors of all backgrounds, levels and arenas of experience, and artistic and professional goals are wholeheartedly welcome and warmly encouraged to apply.

Applications for our 2021 Retreats will be released on December 1, 2020 and are due no later than March 15, 2021.

Each seminar, lecture, and activity is designed to facilitate immersion within a trajectory of profound artistic growth and skill-building. The following are cornerstones of the Retreat experience:

  • Group conducting seminars led by our clinicians.

  • Private conducting instruction.

  • Skill-building lectures.

  • Immersive excursions into the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

  • Extensive private study and meditative time surrounded by the beauty of the place.

  • Forums and group discussions.

  • Optional activities such as sunrise yoga, guided meditation, and stargazing excursions.

  • An informal concert in Singing Canyon at the culmination of the Retreat, with each participant conducting.

The following is included in the tuition for the Retreat:

  • All coursework and course materials.

  • Five nights of lodging at the Boulder Mountain Lodge.

  • Shuttle originating at either Salt Lake City International Airport or Las Vegas International Airport to/from Boulder.

  • Breakfast and coffee/tea every morning.

  • Welcome and farewell dinners at the award-winning Hell's Backbone Grill, including preceding social hour.

  • Campfire dinner and picnic lunch in the Grand Staircase.

Tuition ranges from $1,300 to $2,200, depending on participant's choice of quad, double, or single occupancy.

We are sensitive to the burdensome cost of summer music programs, and are committed to keeping our tuition rates reasonable and competitive for a summer conducting institute of this type and caliber. A limited amount of financial aid may be available based on need, and we are happy to assist in whatever capacity we can to procure fundraising resources or professional development grants.
